  17. <p>The Endeavour crew tries out a $23 million high-end commode

  19. <p>     The agenda for astronauts aboard the space shuttle Endeavour
  20. includes launching a communications satellite, walking in
  21. space, chatting with students about weightlessness, ringing a
  22. tiny replica of the Liberty Bell to mark Clinton's
  23. Inauguration. Oh, and yes, they'll be trying out a new
  24. toothbrush holder (price: $200,000) and an improved space toilet
  25. that cost an astronomical $23 million.

  27. <p>     The redesigned commode is more, well, commodious than
  28. earlier models. It features an 8-in.-diameter opening (twice as
  29. big as the old design); easy-to-replace canisters (solid matter
  30. used to collect in the bowl, and astronauts sometimes had to
  31. smash it down with a spatula); and (thank heavens) more
  32. powerful fans. As expensive as the device is, it was little
  33. wonder that Mission Control mildly admonished the crew for
  34. leaving the lid up and the fan going after they'd finished doing
  35. their business.
